Help Translate CairoKee’s song ‘Ya El Medan’ to 20 languages in 7 days

CairoKee’s latest music video ‘Ya El Medan’ has hit a cord with me and with many Egyptians as it quickly became a viral video on YouTube and the social networks. The lyrics of the song describes our persistence in continuing the revolution until we reach our Jan25 goals: Freedom, Dignity and Social Justice.

I want your help in translating the lyrics of this song into 20 languages in the next 7 days – midnight (Cairo local time) of Wednesday 7th December.

Why translate it?
Egypt’s revolution has become a symbol of peaceful protest against injustice and we should share our story to the world in as many languages possible.

Why 7 days?
I believe that there needs to be a deadline in order to get things done and I’m willing to commit the next 7 days to achieve this goal in order to make this video available to a world audience.

What do I want from you:
Can you or someone you know translate the lyrics below into your native language. If you are willing to help, then first write in the comment box below and clearly state which language you will be translating to. If you don’t have time to help, you can tweet or share this post with your friends by using the share buttons available on the left of this post.

Start translating:
I’ve received subtitles in Arabic and translations/subtitling in English, Turkish, Japanese, German, Malay, French, Spanish, Greek, Portuguese, Italian, Catalan, Swedish, Indonesian, Norwegian, Urdu, Hungarian, Persian and Danish so far. 19 down. 1 to go!

Here is the text of the English translation that I completed recently to help you in your translation effort.

CairoKee ft. Aida El Ayouby – Hey Square

0:09-0:13 Hey. Hey Square (Tahrir Square).
0:13-0:17 Where have you been all this time?
0:17-0:21 With you we sang. And with you we labored.
0:21-0:25 We fought our fears. And we prayed.
0:26-0:30 All as one hand. Day and night.
0:30-0:34 And with you nothing is impossible.
0:34-0:39 The voice of freedom brings us together.
0:39-0:43 Finally our lives have a meaning.
0:43-0:48 There is no going back. Our voices are heard.
0:48-0:53 And the dream is not forbidden anymore.

0:53-0:56 Hey. Hey Square.
0:56-1:01 Where have you been all this time?
1:01-1:05 You brought down the wall. You lit the light.
1:05-1:10 You gathered around you a broken people.
1:10-1:14 We were born anew.
1:14-1:18 And a persistent dream has been born.
1:18-1:23 We’ve disagreed with good intentions.
1:23-1:27 Sometimes things weren’t clear.
1:27-1:31 We’ll protect our country and our children’s children.
1:31-1:36 We’ll protect the rights of the lost lives of our youth.

1:36 – 1:40 Hey. Hey Square.
1:40 – 1:44 Where have you been all this time?
1:44 – 1:49 With you we felt and started
1:49 – 1:53 After we had been far and had come to the end.
1:53 – 1:57 We have to change ourselves with our hands.
1:57 – 2:02 You gave us a lot and the rest is up to us.
2:02 – 2:06 Sometime I worry that you’ll become a memory.
2:06 – 2:11 That you’ll become distant from us and the idea will die.
2:11 – 2:15 And we’ll go back and forget what happened.
2:15 – 2:20 And tell stories about you in our tales.

2:20 – 2:24 Hey. Hey Square.
2:24 – 2:28 Where have you been all this time?
2:28 – 2:33 The Square is full. With all kinds.
2:33 – 2:37 The reckless one. And the courageous.
2:37 – 2:41 There is the passionate one. And the one who are on a ride.
2:41 – 2:46 The loud one. The quiet one.
2:46 – 2:50 We get together. Drink tea.
2:50 – 2:54 We now know how to get our rights.
2:54 – 2:59 You let the world hear us.
2:59 – 3:04 And you let the neighbors get together.

3:04 – 3:08 Hey. Hey Square.
3:08 – 3:12 Where have you been all this time?
3:12 – 3:16 Our idea is our strength.
3:16 – 3:21 Our weapon is our unity.
3:21 – 3:25 The square says the truth.
3:25 – 3:29 It always says no the oppressor.
3:29 – 3:33 The square is like a wave.
3:33 – 3:38 There are people riding it. Others are pulled in by it.
3:38 – 3:42 People outside of it calling it chaotic.
3:42 – 3:47 And what has been done is now written.
3:47 – 3:51 Hey. Hey Square.
3:51 – 3:55 Where have you been all this time?

I will insert it as subtitles tonight.

Salam! Here’s the lyrics in Malay:

CairoKee ft. Aida El Ayouby – Wahai Dataran

    0:09-0:13 Wahai. Wahai Dataran.
0:13-0:17 Di manakah kau selama ini?
0:17-0:21 Bersamamu kami bernyanyi. Dan bersamamu kami berjerih payah.
0:21-0:25 Kami lawan ketakutan kami. Dan kami berdoa.
0:26-0:30 Semua ibarat satu tangan. Siang dan malam.
0:30-0:34 Dan bersamamu tiada yang mustahil.
    0:34-0:39 Suara kebebasan menyatukan kita.
0:39-0:43 Akhirnya hidup kita punyai makna.
0:43-0:48 Tak akan kita berpaling. Suara kita telah kedengaran.
0:48-0:53 Dan impian kita tidak di haramkan lagi.

    0:53-0:56 Wahai. Wahai Dataran.
0:56-1:01 Di manakah kau selama ini?
1:01-1:05 Kau runtuhkan tembok. Kau nyalakan cahaya.
1:05-1:10 Kau himpunkan sekelilingmu rakyat yang kehilangan arah.
    1:10-1:14 Kami dilahirkan semula.

    2:20 – 2:24 Wahai. Wahai Dataran.
2:24 – 2:28 Di manakah kau selama ini?
2:28 – 2:33 Dataran ini sarat. Dengan pelbagai rupa.
2:33 – 2:37 Yang gopoh. Dan yang berani.
2:37 – 2:41 Ada yang bersemangat. Dan ada yang terikut-ikut.
    2:41 – 2:46 Yang lantang. Yang diam.
    2:46 – 2:50 Kami bersua. Meminum teh.
2:50 – 2:54 Kami tahu bagaimana mendapatkan hak kami.
2:54 – 2:59 Kau perdengarkan kami kepada dunia.
    2:59 – 3:04 Dan kau himpunkan jiran-jiran bersama.

    3:04 – 3:08 Wahai. Wahai Dataran.
3:08 – 3:12 Di manakah kau selama ini?
3:12 – 3:16 Idea kami adalah kekuatan kami.
3:16 – 3:21 Senjata kami ialah perpaduan kami.
    3:21 – 3:25 Dataran ini menuturkan kebenaran.
3:25 – 3:29 Ia sentiasa berkata tidak kepada penindas.
    3:29 – 3:33 Dataran ini ibarat gelombang.
3:33 – 3:38 Ia mengandungi marhaen yang menunggangnya.Yang selainnya lumpuh kerananya.
    3:38 – 3:42 Orang luar memanggilnya huru-hara.
    3:47 – 3:51 Wahai. Wahai Dataran.
3:51 – 3:55 Di manakah kau selama ini?

    Salut!

Hey there! I posted the Arabic transliteration for you.

    • Anonymous

There has been an update to the Arabic transliterations. I made the change to the Arabic lyrics posted earlier (above). The change is:

      instead of

  • Anonymous

Sure Tamatim92! I hope the words appear fine and the Arabic letters are not disconnected:

Hey! Hey Plaza (La Plaza del Tahrir)!
¿Dónde has estado todo este tiempo?
    Contigo cantamos. Y contigo trabajamos.
Hemos luchado nuestros miedos. Y oramos.

    Hey! Hey Plaza!

    Hey! Hey Plaza!

    Hey, Hey Plaza!

    Hey, Hey Plaza!
¿Dónde has estado todo este tiempo?

Hey, I am nearly done with the greek translation, but I have one question. I am not sure how to interpret 2:37 – 2:41 “[..]And the one who are on a ride.”
Could you enlighten me on this one, please?

    • Fikragideeda

      hey

2:37 to 2:41 “illi habib w illi rakib” means those who loved (genuinely felt) and those who rode the wave (in english jumped on the bandwagon). it refers to political movements who joined late in order to preserve their reputation or for political capital but didn’t necessarily agree with the revolution’s aims. The theme of the muslim brotherhood et al (hello SCAF!) who didn’t participate in the initial protests but who lent their weight once it was obvious which way the wind was blowing.

      • Paraskevee

Thank you for the prompt answer. I had this impression, but I wasn’t sure at all. And it’s for a purpose like this one, you don’t want to give the wrong idea in the translation.
Again, thanks. I’ll post the lyrics now.
        Wishing all power to you!

True. Thanks for the clarification FikraGideeda!

    0:13-0:17 Πού ήσουν τόσο καιρό;

    0:56-1:01 Πού ήσουν τόσο καιρό;

    1:40 – 1:44 Πού ήσουν τόσο καιρό;

    2:24 – 2:28 Πού ήσουν τόσο καιρό;

    3:08 – 3:12 Πού ήσουν τόσο καιρό;
    3:12 – 3:16 Η ιδέα μας είναι η δύναμή μας.
    3:51 – 3:55 Πού ήσουν τόσο καιρό;

Thank you so much for the Greek translation! I want to give you credit on the blog for your effort, is there a twitter account or a blog I link it back to you?

      • Paraskevee

No need. We should thank you, for giving us the chance to contribute to this movement!

Please Paraskevee, I insist on giving you credit. A twitter account or blog would be cool. Thanks again!

  • Fikragideeda

    hey,

great job and what a brilliant idea to get this translated and out there so more people can enjoy it. kudos. i just wanted to revise the english translation slightly, because I felt that parts of the translation didn’t quite convey the self-contemplative quality of the song and its sense of loss and seemed a little inquisitorial, which isn’t at all what the song is about. please feel free to use as you will or ignore.

0:21-0:25 We battled our fears and we supplicated

Substituted “battled” for fought, which I think better encapsulates the internal conflict. Substitued “supplicated” for “prayed” because it could cause confusion.

0:30-0:34 And with you there’s no longer anything impossible.

Preferred “no longer anything impossible” as more true to the original, and emphasizes the shift.

0:48-0:53 And the dream is not forbidden anymore.

I think “forbidden” relates better to personal struggle than “banned” which is more the language of power/politics/police.

1:05-1:10 You gathered around you a broken people.

Substituted “people” for “population” as again it emphasises nationhood over arbitrary statistics.

    1:10-1:14 We were born anew.

Subsituted “anew” for again, focusing on the fresh start the square represents.

1:14-1:18 And a stubborn dream has been born.

Substituted “stubborn” for “persistent” as a more faithful translation of عنيد, and so as not to lose the reference to the battle of wills which the first 18 days represented, with Mubarak;s purported claims to have a doctorate in stubbornness.

1:18-1:23 We’ve disagreed with pure intentions.

Substituted “pure” for “good” as a better translation of صافية .

1:31-1:36 And the rights of those of our youth who were lost.

    1:36 – 1:40 Oh, oh Square.

    See 0:09-0:13

1:44 – 1:49 With you we felt and began.

Substituted “began” for “started” as personal preference. Also be aware of possible word play in original with ابتدأنا vs ابتدعنا we began vs. we created, since the revolution has been such an inspiration for so many artists.

1:49 – 1:53 After we strayed and were finished.

Substituted “strayed” for “had been far” and “were finished” for “had come to the end” as I feel it is more an expression of being on the wrong path and self wronging vs redemption that tahrir represents.

1:53 – 1:57 We have to change ourselves with our own hands.

    Inserted “own” for emphasis.

2:11 – 2:15 And we’ll go back and forget the past.

substitued “the past” for “what happened” as more true to the original, but not sure about this one, could be either one.

Have to go, will try to complete the rest in a few.

Thanks so much! what you wrote all sounds good, will work on the tweaks today. Do you have a twitter account or blog so that I can give credit to your contribution and link back to you?

  • The Mid Foundation

With all due respect, I think this English translation is more nuanced and less literal. And it rhymes :)

    The lyrics in Portuguese:

0:09-0:13 Ei, ei Praça [Praça Tahrir, Praça da Libertação]
0:13-0:17 Onde você esteve todo esse tempo?
0:17-0:21 Com você nós cantamos. E com você trabalhamos.
0:21-0:25 Nós lutamos contra nossos temores. E com você oramos.
0:26-0:30 Todos, como se fôssemos uma mão. Dia e noite.
    0:30-0:34 E com você nada é impossível.
    0:34-0:39 A voz da liberdade junta-nos todos.
0:39-0:43 Finalmente nossas vidas têm um significado.
0:43-0:48 Não é possível voltar atrás. Nossas vozes são ouvidas.
    0:48-0:53 E o sonho não é mais proibido.
    0:53-0:56 Ei, ei Praça.
0:56-1:01 Onde você esteve todo esse tempo?
1:01-1:05 Você derrubou o muro. Você acendeu a luz.

    3:21 – 3:25 A praça diz a verdade.
3:25 – 3:29 Nunca diz não ao opressor.
    3:29 – 3:33 A praça é como uma onda.
3:33 – 3:38 Há pessoas que montam nela. Outros são puxados por ela.
    3:38 – 3:42 Pessoas de fora dela chamando-a caótica.
    3:42 – 3:47 E o que foi feito agora está escrito.
    3:47 – 3:51 Ei, ei Praça.

2:41-2:46 Chi grida, chi sta in silenzio.
    2:46-2:50 Ci riuniamo, beviamo tè
2:50-2:54 Ora sappiamo come ottenere i nostri diritti

Hi Wil… I’m working on getting you a Russian translation today

      Neal, you are da man!

  • Cati

    Hi! Here’s the Catalan translation:

    Ei! Ei Plaça (Plaça Tahrir)!
On has estat tot aquest temps?
Amb tu hem cantat. I amb tu hem treballat.
Hem combatut les nostres pors. I hem resat.

    Ei! Ei Plaça!
On has estat tot aquest temps?

    Ei! Ei Plaça!
On has estat tot aquest temps?

    Ei! Ei Plaça!
On has estat tot aquest temps?
La Plaça és plena. Amb gent de tota mena.
    El temerari. I el valent.
Hi ha l’apassionat. I qui hi passeja.
    El que crida. El callat.
    Ens ajuntem. Prenem te.
Sabem com aconseguir els nostres drets.
Fas possible que el món ens escolti.
I deixes que els veïs es reuneixin.

    Ei! Ei Plaça!
On has estat tot aquest temps?
    I el qu s’ha fet, ara s’escriu.

    Ei! Ei Plaça!
On has estat tot aquest temps?

Here is the Indonesian translation by Rizka Pramadita:

      0:09-0:13 Hei. Hei Lapangan.
0:13-0:17 Kemana saja kau selama ini?
0:17-0:21 Denganmu kami bernyanyi. Dan denganmu kami berupaya.
0:21-0:25 Kami lawan rasa takut kami. Dan kami berdoa.
0:26-0:30 Semua sebagai satu tangan. Siang dan malam.
0:30-0:34 Dan bersamamu tak ada yang tak mungkin.
      0:34-0:39 Suara kemerdekaan mempertemukan kami.
      0:39-0:43 Hidup kami akhirnya bermakna.
0:43-0:48 Tak ada lagi jalan tuk berputar balik. Suara kami telah didengar.
0:48-0:53 Dan mimpi itu tak terlarang lagi.

      0:53-0:56 Hei. Hei Lapangan.
0:56-1:01 Kemana saja kau selama ini?
1:01-1:05 Kau tumbangkan tembok itu. Kau sulut cahayanya.
1:05-1:10 Kau kumpulkan sekumpulan orang yang terluka.
      1:10-1:14 Kami terlahir kembali.

      2:20 – 2:24 Hei. Hei Lapangan.
2:24 – 2:28 Kemana saja kau selama ini?
2:28 – 2:33 Lapangan ini penuh sesak. Dengan segalanya.
2:33 – 2:37 Yang nekat. Dan yang berani.
2:37 – 2:41 Ada yang penuh semangat. Ada yang sedang dibonceng.
      2:41 – 2:46 Yang nyaring. Yang pendiam.
2:46 – 2:50 Kami berkumpul bersama. Minum teh.
2:50 – 2:54 Sekarang kami tahu bagaimana mendapat hak kami.
2:54 – 2:59 Kau membuat dunia mendengar kami.
2:59 – 3:04 Dan kau membuat para tetangga saling berkumpul.

      3:04 – 3:08 Hei. Hei Lapangan.
3:08 – 3:12 Kemana saja kau selama ini?
3:12 – 3:16 Pemikiran kami adalah kekuatan kami.
3:16 – 3:21 Senjata kami adalah persatuan kami.
      3:21 – 3:25 Lapangan ini menyuarakan kebenaran.
3:25 – 3:29 Dia selalu berkata tidak pada para penindas.
      3:29 – 3:33 Lapangan ini layaknya gelombang.
3:33 – 3:38 Ada yang berselancar di atasnya. Yang lain tertarik ke dalamnya.
      3:38 – 3:42 Orang-orang di luarnya berkata ini kekacauan.
3:42 – 3:47 Dan apa yang telah terjadi kini tertulis.

      3:47 – 3:51 Hei. Hei Lapangan.
3:51 – 3:55 Kemana saja kau selama ini?

    0:09-0:13 Hei. Hei Plass.
0:13-0:17 Hvor har du vært all denne tiden?
0:17-0:21 Med deg sang vi. Og med deg jobbet vi.
0:21-0:25 Vi sloss mot vår redsel. Og vi ba.
0:26-0:30 Alle som en hånd. Dag og natt.
0:30-0:34 Og med deg er ingenting umulig.
0:34-0:39 Frihetens røst bringer oss sammen.
0:39-0:43 Endelig har livene våre en mening.
0:43-0:48 Det er ingen vei tilbake. Våre stemmer er hørt.
0:48-0:53 Og drømmen er ikke lenger forbudt.

    0:53-0:56 Hei. Hei Plass.

    1:36 – 1:40 Hei. Hei Plass.

    2:20 – 2:24 Hei. Hei Plass.

2:54 – 2:59 Do lot verden høre oss.

FANTASTIC! Thank you so much!! I’ll add the Norwegian subtitles to the video right away.
Do you have a blog or a twitter account so that I can give you credit for your effort and link back to you?

  • MettaBaraka

    Just a small typo in the Norwegian version;
2:54 – 2:59 Do lot verden høre oss. is supposed to be
2:54 – 2:59 Du lot verden høre oss.

    • Anonymous

      Thanks!

  • MettaBaraka

And the language is ‘Norwegian Bokmål’, not ‘Norwegian Nynorsk’ ;-) Blessings from Norway

Persian translation by The Shafagh Group (part of Iran Green movement).

CairoKee ft Aida El Ayouby – Hey Praça

    Hey. Hey praça (praça Tahrir).
Onde você esteve esse tempo todo?
Com você nós cantamos. E com você nós trabalhamos.
    Lutamos nossos medos. E oramos.
Todos como uma só mão. Dia e noite.
E com você nada é impossível.
A voz da liberdade nos une.
Finalmente nossas vidas têm um significado.
Não há como voltar atrás. Nossas vozes sejam ouvidas.
E o sonho nunca mais será proibido.

    Hey. Hey praça (praça Tahrir).
Onde você esteve esse tempo todo?
Você derrubou o muro. Você acendeu a luz.

    Hey. Hey praça (praça Tahrir).
Onde você esteve esse tempo todo?
A Praça está cheia. Com todos os tipos.
    O imprudente. E o corajoso.
Há o apaixonado. E aquele que está passeando.
    O barulhento. O silencioso.
    Estamos juntos. Bebendo chá.
Nós sabemos agora como obter nossos direitos.
Você deixou o mundo nos ouvir.
E você deixou os vizinhos se unírem.

    Hey. Hey praça (praça Tahrir).
Onde você esteve esse tempo todo?
Nossa idéia é a nossa força.
Nossa arma é a nossa unidade.
    A praça diz a verdade.
    Hey. Hey praça.
Onde você esteve esse tempo todo?
